Definitions
Comprehensive Stroke Center (CSC)
A nationally accredited hospital with the highest level of certification for treating complex stroke cases. A CSC can treat all types of strokes, including ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, 24/7. It can perform complex procedures, like minimally invasive catheter-based treatments and neurosurgical procedures; has a team of experienced specialists, including neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuro-interventionalists, neuro-radiologists, and neurointensivists; has access to the most advanced imaging methods; and is committed to advancing stroke care through clinical research.
Thrombectomy Capable Stroke Center/Thrombectomy Ready Stroke Center/Primary Stroke Center Plus (TSC/PSC+)
A nationally accredited hospital that provides all the services of a PSC plus has the tools and the expertise to perform mechanical thrombectomy, which is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to remove a blood clot from an artery. These centers also have neurointensive care and 24/7 on-site critical care coverage.
Primary Stroke Center (PSC)
A nationally accredited hospital that meets specific standards to provide stroke care with a dedicated stroke unit. A PSC has advanced imaging, which provides access to advanced imaging to perform diagnostic assessments. Qualified staff consisting of a team of medical professionals trained in stroke care. Individualized care that provides care to meet the needs of each patient. Post-discharge care that coordinates care for patients after they leave the hospital. Performance data that collects data on the hospital's stroke treatment performance.
Acute Stroke Ready Hospitals (ASRH)
A nationally accredited or Illinois Department of Public Health designated hospital that provides initial diagnostic services, stabilization, and emergent care prior to transfer to a higher-level stroke center, such as a primary, thrombectomy, or comprehensive stroke center. ASRH can also administer life-saving medications, such as thrombolytics, to eligible patients.
