What Can You Do?
Start With Yourself
Participate in preventive health care through annual visits with your primary doctor. Attend health screening events. Reduce alcohol consumption, quit smoking, and discuss your mental health with your doctor, your family, and your friends. Evaluate your coping strategies for stress and take control of what you can through weight loss, increased exercise, and a healthier diet.
Support (and Challenge) Your Fellow Men
Breakthrough social barriers and promote discussion on mental health within your family, friendships, and with others you trust. Model behaviors and ideals that will positively shape boys and young men’s future habits and beliefs. Promote gender equity on behalf of both men and women. Challenge gender roles that have developed in the home and workplace. Participate in research and data collection if presented with the opportunity.
Be An Advocate
Join the discussion on men’s health and promote awareness in your home, workplace, and community. Join and attend organized events for health screening. Monitor for activities and get involved with men’s health awareness events. Interact with men’s health groups online, engage with policymakers and other individuals in advancing local and federal proposals to improve men’s health, and demonstrate an equality- and equity-focused approach to building a more successful future for both men and women.
Reflect
- Consider your ideals of masculinity and how they impact your worldview, habits, and relationships.
- Identify your primary motivation to improve your health and make changes.
- Determine if you are practicing healthy stress reduction and mental health behaviors.
- Question: Do you know what resources to refer a friend to if they need help?
