End of Life Options for Terminally Ill Patients

Under the Options for Terminally Ill Patients Act, physicians licensed in Illinois can now prescribe medications for certain terminally ill patients to self-administer to end their life. Patients must be Illinois residents to receive aid-in-dying care.

Illinois physicians are not required provide aid-in-dying care. If a physician does not want to participate, and a patient transfers to another provider, a copy of the patient’s medical record must be shared in a timely manner.
