SPRINGFIELD– The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and the Illinois Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC) program are honoring Evelyn (Evotte) Susada, B.S.N., R.N.C, a nurse in the emergency department at Advocate Children’s Hospital in Park Ridge, with a special pediatric Lifetime Achievement Award for her contributions to childhood care.  The Ron W. Lee, M.D. – Excellence in Pediatric Care Awards are given annually by IDPH and EMSC to recognize those dedicated to pediatric emergency care and childhood injury prevention initiatives.  Individuals or organizations can be nominated in one of three award categories - Lifetime Achievement, Clinical Excellence, and Community Service.

“Evelyn Susada is a quality and safety focused nurse who has worked in the emergency department at Advocate Children’s Hospital providing compassionate pediatric care for the past 24 years,” said IDPH Director Nirav D. Shah, M.D. J.D.  “Evelyn is known for her clinical knowledge and skills in pediatric emergency care and is considered the ‘true gold standard’ by her peers.  I am proud to award Evelyn Susada the Ron W. Lee, M.D. Excellence in Pediatric Care Lifetime Achievement Award.”

“Evotte Susada truly is a candidate who has every virtue that this award would represent.  I cannot think of a more deserving nor a better example of recognition of pediatric excellence,” said Clifford Spanierman, M.D.  “Ms. Susada has continued to be an energetic pillar of our Pediatric Emergency Division.  Her teamwork is extraordinary, her patient care unsurpassed, and her dedication to her patients is truly awe inspiring.

“We have had so many new team members that have learned the pediatric emergency nursing foundations and excellent care approach from Evotte – as well as experienced nurses who continue to learn from her,” said Advocate Children’s Hospital Pediatric Emergency Services Manager Pam Samuelson, B.S.N., R.N., C.E.N., T.N.S.  “Evotte is a superior caregiver for high acuity patients, making it look easy navigating the tasks and procedures but still keeping the patient and the family comforted.”

The Ron W. Lee, M.D. Excellence in Pediatric Care awards are presented each May.  Dr. Lee was the medical director for the Division of Emergency Medical Services and Highway Safety at IDPH, as well as the director of emergency medicine at Loyola University Medical Center and was instrumental in establishing and fostering the EMSC program in Illinois.  He passed away in 1998.

The Illinois EMSC program is a collaborative effort between IDPH and Loyola University Chicago.  It was established in 1994 to ensure the emergency medical care needs of children are adequately addressed.
