IDPH Recognizes Teri Campbell For Excellence In Pediatric Care

Ron E. Lee, M.D. Pediatric Care Award – Clinical Excellence

 
SPRINGFIELD– The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and the Illinois Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC) program are honoring Teri Campbell, R.N., B.S.N., C.F.R.N., a nurse with the University of Chicago Air Medical Network (UCAN), with a special pediatric Clinical Excellence Award for her contributions to childhood care.  The Ron W. Lee, M.D. – Excellence in Pediatric Care Awards are given annually by IDPH and EMSC to recognize those dedicated to pediatric emergency care and childhood injury prevention initiatives.  Individuals or organizations can be nominated in one of three award categories - Lifetime Achievement, Clinical Excellence, and Community Service.
 
Campbell has 30 years of obstetric, emergency, and flight nursing experience.  She began her critical care career in high-risk labor and delivery and served on a maternal/fetal transport team.  Since leaving obstetrics, Campbell has continued to work as a flight nurse in a role that includes all types of emergency, trauma, and critical care patients.  In her current flight nurse position, approximately half of her transports involve pediatric and neonatal patients.  She has flown with trauma patients from the scene of highways and cornfields, and managed critically ill patients while flying hours over oceans to get them home or to the care they need.  Campbell has authored numerous critical care articles and chapters in several critical care text books, as well as presented on topics varying from adult trauma, pediatrics, pediatric critical care, transport, neonatal, and obstetrics.  In addition to being a flight nurse, Campbell is also an instructor in numerous critical care courses and is the Executive Program Director for Illinois Heart Rescue, a grant funded research program that examines pre-hospital cardiac arrest care for pediatrics and adults.
 
“With a resume that is 12 pages long and filled with professional experience, publications, and speaking engagements, I am honored to award Teri Campbell the Ron W. Lee, M.D. Excellence in Pediatric Care Clinical Excellence Award,” said IDPH Director Nirav D. Shah, M.D., J.D. 
 
“In her role as a flight nurse, she always takes the time to connect with parents and the family of her patients, often creating tight bonds and remaining friends well after the patient has been discharged.  She continues to be an advocate for all her patients, particularly those younger who may not have a strong voice in their care.  She will go above and beyond to do the right thing at the right time, every time,” said UCAN Chief Flight Nurse Kelley Holdren.

The Ron W. Lee, M.D. Excellence in Pediatric Care awards are presented each May.  Dr. Lee was the medical director for the Division of Emergency Medical Services and Highway Safety at IDPH, as well as the director of emergency medicine at Loyola University Medical Center and was instrumental in establishing and fostering the EMSC program in Illinois.  He passed away in 1998.
 
The Illinois EMSC program is a collaborative effort between IDPH and Loyola University Chicago.  It was established in 1994 to ensure the emergency medical care needs of children are adequately addressed.
