February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month

Teen dating violence is a public health issue that is unfortunately all too common. According to the CDC, dating violence can be classified as physical, emotional or sexual. Virtually 1.5 million high school students nationwide experience physical abuse from a dating partner in one year. One in three adolescents in the U.S. is a victim of physical, sexual, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner, this figure surpasses rates of other types of youth violence. One in 10 high school students has been purposefully hit, slapped or physically hurt by a boyfriend or girlfriend.

Did you know that one in three high school relationships involve some sort if physical, emotional or sexual abuse? Would you know the warning signs of teen dating abuse? Many parents don’t. Talking to your child about what a healthy relationship is a start.
