Health Risks Associated With Herbal Supplement

Ton Shen Health/ Life Rising Recalls DHZC-2 Tablet

 
SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is cautioning people about potential health risks associated with the recalled herbal supplement Ton Shen Health/Life Rising DHZC-2.  Ton Shen Health of Chicago is recalling its DHZC-2 Tablets because they have the potential to be contaminated with elevated levels of lead.
 
“Lead poisoning can occur when a person is exposed to high levels of lead over a short period of time,” said IDPH Director Nirav D. Shah, M.D., J.D.  “We urge people not buy the recalled supplement if they see it in stores, and for people who have purchased this product, to return it for a refund.  The health effects of lead poisoning can be serious, and in some cases deadly.”
 
IDPH is aware of two illnesses potentially associated with this supplement, as well as the possibility of two deaths.  IDPH is working with the Cook County Department of Public Health and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to further investigate these cases and identify other health risks.
 
The recalled DHZC-2 tablets were mainly sold in Chicago-area in retails stores. Some were also distributed to other states through mail orders.  Ton Shen Health/Life Rising is recalling all lots of “DHZC-2” tablets.  The UPC number is 616042102727 and can be found on all recalled DHZC-2 bottles.  The sale of the product has been suspended and inventory put on hold while FDA and the company continue to investigate the source of the problem.
