COVID-19 Vaccine Administration Data

Data are reported based on the date IDPH receives vaccination reports from providers.  Providers are to report as soon as practicable, but reporting can be delayed as much as 72 hours, which can lead to a lag between vaccines delivered to Illinois and vaccines administered.

Data is provisional. Last Updated: ##/##/####

Information in this section is provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which includes data available from federal programs not included in Illinois’ vaccine database. CDC reports the total number of people who reside in Illinois who have been vaccinated, including Illinois residents who have been vaccinated in other states. This data also includes vaccination records from Illinois’ vaccine database, I-CARE.

Due to ongoing data review and quality assurance efforts, data for previously reported COVID-19 vaccine doses administered are being continuously updated. Therefore, previously reported numbers may change to reflect the updated data. IDPH will continue to report the number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered daily, but will also update these data twice a month.

Data Definitions

State-Level Vaccination Summary

Total Doses – This is the total number of vaccine doses received in Illinois. This number includes doses allocated to long-term care facilities, retail pharmacies, as well as doses shipped directly to providers and the Illinois Department of Public Health Strategic National Stockpile.

Total Administered Doses – This is the total number of doses (i.e., shots in arms) that have been reported to IDPH.

Administered Vaccines Data Details

Administered vaccines are reported as doses based on the individual’s county of residence. Some vaccines may be administered to people working in Illinois who live out-of-state. These vaccines will be included in the Illinois state total, but not in county-level totals. The Illinois-Comprehensive Automated Immunization Registry Exchange (I-CARE) https://dph.illinois.gov/topics-services/prevention-wellness/immunization/icare is the reporting system for automated submission of vaccine administration records. Illinois residents vaccinated in other states are not included in the Illinois total. Vaccines administered are reported by the number of doses and the number of people who have completed a primary series.

Some vaccines require multiple doses over several weeks. Therefore, the number of doses will not equal the number of persons with a completed primary series. A person is considered to have completed a primary series based on the type of vaccine. Initially available vaccines require two doses, but later vaccines may only require one dose.

The daily number of administered vaccines is reported based on the date IDPH receives the vaccination report and not the date of administration. COVID-19 vaccination providers must document vaccine administration in their medical record systems within 24 hours of administration and use their best efforts to report administration data to the relevant system for the jurisdiction (i.e., Immunization Information System (IIS)) as soon as practicable and no later than 72 hours after administration.

Bivalent booster doses administered include doses that are also counted in first, second, and third booster dose totals.

Population is defined as the entire population of the county. The IDPH follows Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) guidelines regarding use of vaccines and related agents for the control of vaccine-preventable diseases. https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/acip/index.html

Additional Notes

On August 10, 2021, IDPH transitioned from including all vaccinations administered in Illinois, including those administered to people who live out of state, to reporting the number of Illinois residents who have been vaccinated in Illinois.

On August 31, 2021, IDPH reported 122,680 vaccines were administered on August 26, 2021. Of that total, 97,614 vaccinations were vaccines administered over the previous several months. For quality assurance purposes, a COVID-19 vaccine provider in Will County removed all previously reported vaccines administered and re-entered them, which is reflected in the August 26, 2021 data. While the vaccinations were removed from each day they were originally reported, they were re-entered on one day – August 26, 2021.

In early March 2022, a national database tracking COVID-19 vaccine experienced a change causing IDPH to update its procedures for pulling vaccine data from the database. As a result, the updated data pull was able to identify additional vaccine doses delivered to Illinois not previously captured. The Total Illinois Doses were updated on the website on March 15, 2022, to reflect the change.
