Lyme Disease Peer-Reviewed Research Articles

In this study, researchers examined trends in reported Lyme disease cases over a 25-year span to look at fluctuations in the populations most impacted by the disease. Demographic data of confirmed Lyme disease cases reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention via the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System were studied from 1992-2016.

This study looks at the use of commercial insurance claims data in comparison to cases reported via nationally standardized surveillance case data for Lyme disease to get a clear picture of how many people are diagnosed and treated for Lyme disease annually, and to ascertain the public health burden of Lyme disease in the United States.

In this study, researchers:

  1. outline the public health importance of tick surveillance
  2. identify gaps in knowledge regarding the geographic distributions and abundance of medically important ticks in the United States and the presence and prevalence of their associated pathogens
  3. describe key objectives for tick surveillance and review methods appropriate for addressing those goals
  4. assess current capacity and barriers to implementation and sustainability of tick surveillance programs
