MANTENO – This afternoon, the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs (IDVA) learned that a case of Legionnaires’ disease was identified in a resident at the Manteno Veterans’ Home (IVHM) and notified all residents, families, and staff. The resident is being treated and is in stable condition.
“Nothing matters more than providing the utmost care for our veterans,” said Linda Chapa LaVia, Acting Director of the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs. “Our staff has taken swift action. We will continue to monitor this case and be diligent in our efforts to communicate with our resident heroes, their families, and our valued staff.”

Number of respiratory cases in Illinois doubles
SPRINGFIELD– The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) learned of the death of an individual who had recently vaped and was hospitalized with severe respiratory illness. The number of cases of people reported to IDPH who have used e-cigarettes or vaped and have been hospitalized with respiratory symptoms has doubled in the past week. A total of 22 people, ranging in age from 17-38 years, have experienced respiratory illness after using e-cigarettes or vaping. IDPH is working with local health departments to investigate another 12 individuals. Affected individuals have experienced respiratory symptoms including cough, shortness of breath, and fatigue. SPRINGFIELD –The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) recently linked two confirmed cases of Legionnaires’ disease to the AmericInn by Wyndham Hotel in Schaumburg, Illinois, and is currently investigating the cluster with the Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH). Both confirmed cases reported use of water in their guest rooms, the hot tub, and pool during hotel stays in July and August, 2019. QUINCY – The Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs (IDVA) and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) are investigating 9 confirmed communicable respiratory illnesses and 3 possible illnesses among residents at the Illinois Veterans’ Home – Quincy (IVHQ). Symptoms were exhibited by residents during the period of July 24, 2019 – August 10, 2019.
Current investigative findings suggest a common bacterial or viral cause, which tend to occur with greater frequency at this time of year due to seasonal uptick. The Adams County Health Department is also assisting in this investigation to identify and mitigate possible sources of the respiratory illnesses. Legionella is not suspected as the cause.

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is reporting the first confirmed human case of West Nile virus in Illinois for 2019. A Chicago resident in his 70s became ill in late July.
“Although the first human case of West Nile virus this year in Illinois has been reported a little later than we typically see, it is important to remember that there is an ongoing risk of disease from a mosquito bite,” said IDPH Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike. “West Nile virus can cause serious illness in some people so it’s important that you take precautions like wearing insect repellent and getting rid of stagnant water around your home.”
Last year, 74 counties in Illinois reported a West Nile virus positive mosquito batch, bird, horse, and/or human case. For the 2018 season, IDPH reported 176 human cases (although human cases are underreported), including 17 deaths....

Protect yourself from tick bites
SPRINGFIELD– Last summer, a Kankakee County resident tested positive for Heartland virus, the first case reported in Illinois. In response to this human case, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) collaborated with the Illinois Natural History Survey Medical Entomology Laboratory (INHS MEL) and Kankakee County Health Department to conduct the first environmental health investigation to a novel tickborne disease case. Ticks were collected from the area and sent to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for Heartland virus testing. Heartland virus was detected in Lone Star ticks collected from Kankakee County.

These individuals experienced respiratory symptoms including cough, shortness of breath, and fatigue. Some also experienced vomiting and diarrhea.
